Her story:

“With just one polka dot, nothing can be achieved. In the universe, there is the sun, the moon, the earth, and hundreds of millions of stars.”

Yayoi Kusama is one of the greatest living artists, known for her instantly recognisable polka-dot and infinity installation artworks. Much of her artwork relates back to her childhood where she had a traumatic upbringing, began experiencing vivid hallucinations by the age of 10 and developed an obsession with dots and the universe, using repetition to confront her phobias and fascinations. At the age of 27, she headed to New York with just a few hundred dollars, 60 silk kimonos and a number of drawings, planning on surviving by selling one or the other. Her reputation as an artist grew quickly from there, and she associated with artists such as Georgia O’Keefe and Andy Warhol. She worked herself to the point of hospitalisation on a regular basis and struggled financially, despite the volume of work she was producing. In 1977 after moving back to Japan, she checked herself into a hospital for the mentally ill, deciding to take up permanent residence there. Continuing to make artwork, she has collaborated with the likes of Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and Lancome during her hospital residency. With a little help from Instagram and the consequential rise of installation art, her star continues to grow, her work having the highest turnover of any living woman artist, current sell-out shows and a recent documentary on her life.
