Her Story:

“I am my own muse, I am the subject I know best. The subject I want to know better.”

Frida Kahlo was one of Mexico’s greatest artists and was best known for her painted self-portraits, her political activism and her love of colourful traditional clothes and jewellery. She faced many challenges throughout her lifetime, both physically, mentally and emotionally, but she never let this disrupt the things that she was passionate about. She used her painting as an outlet, revealing her innermost thoughts and feelings through symbolism and portraits of the self. Her work was dark, colourful and surrealist in style, keeping true to Mexican folk aesthetics and also commenting on gender, class, race and politics as well as identity. She was equally as passionate about politics as her artwork, joining communist groups in her youth and her last public appearance being at a demonstration protesting against the US overthrowing the Guatemalan president in 1954.
