The Fashion Lab

From humble hot-desk beginnings to a constantly evolving studio and project space, The Fashion Lab was founded by Melanie Kyles and Helen McClafferty to provide a working space for events, workshops, tuition and collaborations. The concept was supported by Orbis, and the space itself located in Ampersand Inventions, 4th floor Commercial Union House.

In early 2018, both businesses felt as though they had outgrown their shared studio which was next to The Fashion Lab, so Helen moved into the studio next door to focus on her brand Osseus, whilst Melanie moved into working in The Fashion Lab. Wanting her surroundings to reflect her business aesthetic, Melanie gave the entrance and interiors a fresh update, including a six-foot marble resin sewing bench skilfully made by Ampersand Inventions. The Fashion Lab whilst functioning as a working studio, is also often used for client and independent workshops, and is well suited for creative business meetings and intimate events.

The studio space plays a large part in visitors and clients experience, from the welcome and inspiring atmosphere, to the fresh colourful aesthetic that carefully balances clean graphics with rich textures, and the functionality and versatility of the space. Regular creative workshops are held here that focus on sewing, embellishment and embroidery, allowing like-minded people to connect, relax and learn. Sometimes these will be more socially focussed and may involve gin and locally sourced cake that supports other independent businesses.
